The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to be one of the most exciting editions in recent memory, with the tournament kicking off in early March 2025. However, all eyes are currently on the upcoming auction, expected to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the last week of November 2024. This year, a significant shift in player retention rules is causing waves across IPL circles, creating a frenzy as the 31 October 2024 retention deadline looms.
Traditionally, if a player’s retention price exceeded the designated cap for that slot, only the lesser amount would be deducted from the franchise’s auction purse. However, in IPL 2025, if the retention price is higher than the cap, the entire amount will now be deducted. This means that if a franchise retains a player for Rs. 17 crore when the designated price is Rs. 15 crore, Rs. 17 crore will be deducted from their auction kitty, not Rs. 15 crore as before.
IPL Prodigies Entering the 2025 Auction Pool
This shift in retention policy is expected to push several top Indian cricketers into the auction pool. Big names like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Kuldeep Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh are likely to join the auction, sparking intense competition among franchises. The stakes are high, and with more players entering the pool, the auction is expected to be even more unpredictable. Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, both former captains of their respective IPL teams—Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders—are likely to seek contracts that reflect their leadership and performance capabilities.
While many teams are scrambling to adjust to the new retention rules, Mumbai Indians appear to be taking a different approach. The franchise is expected to retain four of its core Indian players—Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. While this will undoubtedly eat into their auction purse, Mumbai’s management seems to have reached an agreement with these stars, prioritizing team stability over financial flexibility. This decision could pay off, given the importance of experience and continuity in a tournament as competitive as the IPL.
Sunrisers Hyderabad is another team to watch, as they are expected to retain key players like Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, and Abhishek Sharma. However, under the new retention rules, they will lose Rs. 55 crore from their auction purse due to these high-priced retentions. This will leave them with only Rs. 65 crore to spend in the auction, which could significantly impact their ability to bid for other top players.
On the other hand, Punjab Kings’ strategy of retaining only two uncapped players could give them a substantial financial advantage. With a massive Rs. 112 crore purse, they could outbid many other franchises for high-profile players entering the auction, allowing them to build a stronger team.
